The Last of Us showrunner Craig Mazin has revealed how many more seasons the hit HBO series will have. Between looking back on season 2 and forward to season 3, Mazin also discussed how the TV show will come to an end.

"There's a decent chance that season 3 will be longer than season 2" Mazin told Collider, adding that TV show is probably not ending during that third cycle.

"The thing about Joel's death is that it's so impactful. It's such a narrative nuclear bomb that it's hard to wander away from it," he argued. "We can't really take a break and move off to the side and do a Bill and Frank story. I’m not sure that will necessarily be true for season 3. I think we’ll have a little more room there."

Mazin added, "But certainly, there’s no way to complete this narrative in a third season. Hopefully, we’ll earn our keep enough to come back and finish it in a fourth. That’s the most likely outcome."

Mazin also revealed that the upcoming seasons will explore more of the worlds of the Seraphites cult and W.L.F. paramilitary group. If people are confused about the groups, all they need to do is wait.

"The answer is that everything has been thought through carefully. No, you haven't gotten all the information you deserve. Yes, the information will be coming. We did this all by design," he noted.

Season 1 followed Joel (Pedro Pascal) and Ellie (Bella Ramsey) as they made their way across a post-apocalyptic America. In turn, season 2 has shifted focus to Ellie and Dina (Isabela Merced).

After Joel's death at the hands of Abby (Kaitlyn Dever), Ellie has been on a mission of revenge. So far, in season 2, Ellie has only found the first of the five people involved in Joel's death, which means there's plenty of story left to tell.

The grand finale of The Last of Us season 2 is set to air on Sunday, May 25, on HBO Max.
