In addition to undergoing psychedelic treatment for an eating disorder, Lorde had an experience that she called "the ooze," describing it as "the act of letting herself take up more space in everything she does, whether physically or creatively," Rolling Stone reports. Those experiences, the pop star says, led her to examine her own gender identity.
"My gender got way more expansive when I gave my body more room," Lorde told the publication. Brittany Spanos writes on Rolling Stone that the singer's blurring of gender lines appears on the opening track of her upcoming album, Virgin, where she reportedly sings, "Some days I'm a woman / Some days I'm a man."
Lorde also revealed a recent conversation she had with budding pop star Chappell Roan. It turns out that the "Pink Pony Club" singer asked Lorde if she identified as nonbinary. "I'm a woman except for the days when I'm a man," Lorde told Roan, adding: "I know that's not a very satisfying answer, but there's a part of me that is really resistant to boxing it up."
Lorde's pronouns haven't changed, according to Rolling Stone. Instead, the singer has found herself somewhere in the middle, gender-wise. Specifically, Lorde described herself as a person who's "more comfortable with the fluidity of her expression."
Charli XCX's weekend 1 set at the 2025 Coachella Festival, featured a Lorde cameo to perform their legendary remix of " Girl, So Confusing." At the end of the performance, XCX declared that Brat summer might be over, but urged fans to get ready for a Lorde summer.
In April, Lorde released the lead single of Virgin, "What Was That," her first solo track in almost four years.
Lorde's fourth studio album, Virgin, is scheduled for a release on June 27. It is now available for pre-orders and pre-saves on all music streaming services.
